Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, and the Cape Winelands.
South Africa is the world's 8th-largest wine producer with 300+ years of winemaking history. Two grapes define the country: Chenin Blanc (white) and Pinotage (red).
Chenin Blanc — South Africa's signature white. Called "Steen" locally. Ranges from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. Honeydew, green apple, lanolin, hay. Africa's answer to Vouvray. Often extraordinary value.
- Producers: Mullineux, Ken Forrester, Raats, DeMorgenzon
Pinotage — a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, created in South Africa in 1925. Divisive: fans love its smoky, bramble, coffee character; critics find it rustic. Modern versions are much cleaner.
- Producers: Kanonkop (the icon), Beyerskloof, Simonsig
Cabernet Sauvignon & Bordeaux blends from Stellenbosch rival Napa at a fraction of the price.
- Producers: Rust en Vrede, Meerlust Rubicon, Vergelegen
Sell notes:
- Value white wine: South African Chenin Blanc ($12-20) is the best value in white wine globally
- Customer who likes Malbec: try Pinotage — similar boldness, unique character
- Cab lover on a budget: Stellenbosch Cab at $20 = Napa quality at half the price
- Gift: Meerlust Rubicon ($35) — South Africa's most respected red blend
